Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the variance in goniometric mesurement of external rotation of the shoulder between altered starting position (60¢ª, 45¢ª and 0¢ª abduction) and standard starting position (90¢ª abduction), using standard methods of measurement. Range of motion measures of shoulder external rotation were recorded for normal adult subjects (10 men and 20 women), who volunteered to participate.
The results were as follows :
1. A positive corelation was found between external rotation measured form standard 90¢ª, 60¢ª, 45¢ªand 0¢ª abduction starting position.
2. The range of motion was larger in female compare to male in each measuring position. When abduction of shoulder is limited severely, measured external rotation would be more accurately assessed with a knowledge of normal ROM of external rotation in varying degree of shoulder abduction.
